Take Preston Mitchum, a Black queer attorney, activist, and cast member on Bravo’s Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard. Mitchum is a beacon for intersectional advocacy.
As a lawyer and the CEO of PDM Consulting, Mitchum works tirelessly to create safe spaces and empower marginalized communities, particularly LGBTQ+ individuals of color.
According to his official website, Mitchum’s consulting firm focuses on education, coalition-building, and leadership development to drive equity in policy and practice.
In a tweet following Trump’s win, Mitchum reminded his followers,
“We’ve been here before, and we will keep showing up. Hope is not a privilege; it’s a resistance.”
Hope definitely needs work behind it. Positive leaders such as Mitchum are needed for representation. Even if there aren’t mainstream platforms that accept people against Eurocentric norms, Mitchum exemplifies staying persistent and building your own community.
Brittany Packnett Cunningham: The Bridge Between Culture And Justice

Few people balance activism and pop culture as seamlessly as Brittany Packnett Cunningham. Known for her work as an educator, social justice advocate, and BET’s Vice President of Social Impact, Packnett Cunningham uses her platform to connect people to actionable change.
According to an interview with Elle, she describes her role as amplifying marginalized voices and ensuring culture meets meaningful justice.
Through her podcast, UNDISTRACTED, Packnett Cunningham addresses pressing issues in her episodes such as racial inequality and economic disparities. Add this to your list if you’re looking for some food for thought.
She keeps up on current topics and isn’t afraid to start the conversation. Following Trump’s win, she posted on social media;
“Hope isn’t naïve; it’s necessary. We’ve overcome before, and we’ll do it again.”
There’s that recurring idea of hope. As MLK’s speech echoed, “We must continue to dream. Dreams keep hope alive, and though things may look away now in our political realm, we must continue to foster the vision we know is best and keep moving forward.”
Dr. Wendy Osefo: Educator And Firebrand For Equity

Dr. Wendy Osefo, a professor, political analyst, and cast member of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Potomac, exemplifies the balance between media and meaningful work. Her analysis on platforms like CNN and The Hill consistently delves into public policy issues affecting communities of color, particularly in the areas of education and equity.
As reported by The Hill, Osefo has emphasized the importance of civic engagement, particularly for marginalized communities, in resisting the rollback of rights under Trump-era policies.
Her blend of academic and media work offers a voice of reason during turbulent times. We need those who continue to get their hands dirty and work. Martin Luther King was a martyr. We need voices that continue to ring out despite the challenges, just like Osefo.

If anyone understands the weight of King’s legacy, it’s his youngest daughter, Dr. Bernice King. As the CEO of The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, King tirelessly advocates for nonviolence and social justice, ensuring her father’s message lives on.
In a statement published on the King Center’s website, King wrote,
“We must remain grounded in love and nonviolence, even when we are confronted by policies of hate.”
Her leadership reminds us that resistance must come from a place of community and courage. She stays engaged with current issues and uses her platforms to aid in projects that bring us together.
Oh, to bear the name of King. We know King would be proud of his legacy through Bernice, just as we are.
Jasmine Crockett: The Voice Of A New Generation In Congress
Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett represents Texas’s 30th District with boldness and resolve. Known for her vocal support of progressive policies, Crockett has made waves in her first term in Congress by advocating for voting rights, economic justice, and criminal justice reform. Whenever you search up Crockett, her stances are always firm and bold. She is a beacon of light, providing an image of boldness and black excellence.
According to The Dallas Morning News, Crockett has pledged to use her platform to amplify the voices of those often left unheard in political spaces.
“I am here to disrupt systems that don’t serve us,” she stated in a recent interview, emphasizing the importance of representation and accountability.”
Disrupt is a powerful word of choice. We won’t stand for what is wrong and cheat our way through progress. We will break barriers down, no matter how tall the feat.

While Trump’s re-election represents a sobering reality for many, these leaders remind us that hope is not lost. From Preston Mitchum’s advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community to Bernice King’s unwavering dedication to her father’s legacy, these figures embody resilience and resistance.
Dr. King once said,
“We must accept finite disappointment but never lose infinite hope.”
On this MLK Day, we honor the man behind the dream and those who continue to keep it alive. In a time when progress feels precarious, these leaders prove that hope floats and can be a lifeline for us all.
