It’s homecoming season, and you already know that HBCUs do not play when it comes to celebrating legacy, fundraising, and welcoming alumni back to the yard!

In the first half of October’s blacktivities, Lincoln University, Alabama State, Alcorn State, Texas Southern, Morgan State, Delaware State, Alabama A&M, Virginia State University, and Tennessee State students and alumni got down.
Let’s kick off the rest of the season with homecoming fun from more illustrious institutions and a guide for helping you get through the season.

Get Your HBCU Homecoming Fits Together
First things first, you gotta get your fits together. Are you going for comfort, trying to be extra, keeping it low-key, or do you want to be prepared for all the things? You already know the weather in the south, where most of these HBCUs are located, can be all over the place. It’s cold, then hot and humid and then cold again so keep that in mind when you’re traipsing from the tailgate to the after parties.

Conduct Your Relationship Audits
Have the conversations you need to have with yourself and significant others, if it applies. Don’t be tripping down memory lane and getting caught up with an old toxic boo thang at your HBCU homecoming. And don’t make the mistake of taking a new piece down to your alma mater too soon in the relationship. If you’re single, then mingle away, but be safe.
Work Your Plan
It’s safe to say that every HBCU probably heard some variation of your “it isn’t my emergency” or “to be early is to be on time,” blah, blah blah. The point is, you have to have a plan in place…or not. But just know, it’s a good idea to know what events you want to go to, and who you’re going with, because there’s a lot going on, you might need to fit in some nap time in between the game, the concert, day parties, and that midnight brunch. Not to mention that tickets usually sell out for all the main events. If you’re not a planner, do you on a wing and a prayer.

Learn Your Lyrics And Dances
You know what songs they’re going to play. There are always regional sets and generally popular sets, depending on age group and what alumni group you’re hanging with. Plan accordingly. Learn the lyrics to the songs that get everybody hype and do you know how to do the Tamia line dance yet?
Remember Your Well-Being
Covid is still going around, and it’s also flu season so get up to date with vaccines, and if you’re not into vaccines, then do what you need to do to function. At the very least, stay hydrated, and keep in mind that alcohol is not hydrating.
However, don’t forget to treat yourself. Save some room for the low vibrational plates.
