Hide Ya Kids! Hide Ya Waffle House! (The first part is for Herschel Walker and Herschel Walker only.) “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” is in town for election week, filming some very special episodes and we were lucky enough to catch up with correspondents Dulce Sloan and Roy Wood Jr about the show.

BOSSIP’s Sr. Content Editor, Janeé Bolden chatted with Dulce and Roy while they enjoyed scrumptious southern delicacies from — you guessed it — Waffle House.
It was only appropriate considering that Trevor and Roy kicked off this week’s episodes with a special Waffle House-style brawl with the kind of celebrity cameo that only happens in Atlanta. If you missed Monday’s show you can check the clip out below:
Since Dulce and Roy are both southerners, we started off the interview by asking each of them about their go-to Waffle House order.
“Texas bacon cheese steak melt, then I get my hashbrowns scattered, smothered and covered, but I got them scattered, smothered and covered with pepper because I knew I wasn’t going to be able to get hot sauce,” Dulce Sloan told BOSSIP.
“Triple scramble cheese, wheat toast, cheese grits in a bowl,” Roy Wood Jr. told BOSSIP.”You have to be specific about the grits in the bowl because if the grits are runny and they put them on the plate you don’t get as much. I’ve done the calculating. This is scientific over here.”
When the “Daily Show” correspondents weren’t busy visiting their favorite Atlanta eatery, they were filming at the home of “Daily Show” guest T-Pain, who is set to appear as a guest on Tuesday’s episode.
“We did a cold open at T-Pain’s house that will start the show,” Roy Wood Jr told us. “He’s a guest, but he was also kind enough to let us out to his palatial estate in parts of Georgia that I can’t dictate. T-Pain is from Florida, but for the last twenty years his music and his sound has been as influential to Atlanta as any artist you can name and that also disseminated out to everywhere else. Shout out to Nappy Boy radio because they were real kind to us.”
“The man who gave us drinks to drink?” Dulce added.
“And we drank ’em,” Roy continued.
“And got drunk!” Dulce finished, adding more lyrics from “Buy You A Drink.” “If you ever as a child had issues with grammar and tenses, that song is a great lesson. You could learn about grammar, you can learn about tenses, you cold learn about nouns.”
If you aren’t familiar with the discography of T-Pain then you’re missing out on a great joke. It’s clear that this is the kind of improv Dulce and Roy enjoy on a regular basis. It’s the kind of synergy that led to “The Daily Show” earning seven Emmy nominations this year.
What’s even cooler to us is that “The Daily Show” has been the place to turn when so much of American current events and American politics doesn’t seem to be making much sense.
“When you look at the show, and the history and relationship to the show, the show’s relationship with politicians, trusting the Daily Show to come on and talk about issues,” Wood Jr. said. “You got Stacey Abrams who already came on [Monday night’s guest] and Raphael Warnock is supposed to slide through. Warnock is coming on the show. There. Damn I said it. Warnock and Dominique Wilkins, Atlanta Hawks Hall of Famer.”
Warnock’s appearance had not been publicized prior to our interview — due in part, Wood Jr. explained, to shifting schedules. If Monday was any indication, there’s no limit to the caliber of guests the show will welcome on this week.
“A candidate like Warnock, deciding to come on our show this week while we’re in Georgia, I think it’s one of those things,” Wood Jr. added. “It’s dope that they trust us with having the type of viewers that can digest what it is that they have to say about things and I think that’s cool.”
While we were on the subject of politics, we let both Dulce Sloan and Roy Wood Jr. know the interview wouldn’t be complete without them submitting their Bossip style headline on Herschel Walker for us to share with readers.
“See, y’all not right, you should have let us write that,” Wood Jr. said. “You can’t just be putting us on the spot like that.”
“My Bossip headline, “Helmetless Doofus Campaigns With The Caucasity Of A Concussed Caucasian Candidate Cosplaying As A Candidate Of Color,” Wood Jr. told us. “Every Bossip Headline could honestly be “Helmetless Doofus Campaigns With The Caucasity Of A Concussed Caucasian Candidate Cosplaying As A Candidate Of Color.”
Dulce Sloan also shared a Bossip headline for Herschel Walker:
“Messy Family Nonsense: Your Drunk Uncle Is Now Trying To Be A Senator, Who Let This Man Do This?”
How do you think “The Daily Show” contributors did with their Bossip headlines?

It’s been a crazy last few weeks, with headlines dominated by Elon Musk, Herschel Walker and Kanye West.

We’d imagine all three have been fertile ground for writers room jokes, but Wood Jr. says that out of respect for Noah’s relationship with West, he’s been steering clear of commenting on the problematic rapper/designer.
“I would say that Herschel Walker is the biggest threat to democracy of the three that you named,” Wood Jr. told BOSSIP. “The Kanye thing is a little bit of a no-fly zone for us. I know that Kanye and Trevor have had a few words back and forth on social media but I know Trevor last week said he ain’t in no beef with nobody, he just hopes that somebody with a condition gets the help and the medication they need. So if the host of the show is saying that and that’s the North Star, I’m always going to be in step with my dude.”
It works both ways too, Wood Jr. adds, with Sloan nodding in confirmation, as he explains how Trevor has allowed his correspondents to leave their mark on the show as well.
“I don’t think people understand just how much a show like this comes from the person sitting in the chair. Ideas and everything is an extension of his ideologies, and if there’s one thing that I can say Trevor Noah has allowed me to do in seven years, is to follow the things that interest me, not necessarily him, and all I have to do is figure out a way to make it funny.”
“We did police reform. My first two pieces out of the gate were a ride-along with the police department and the 20th anniversary of The Million Man March. Then after that, we did racism in porn, we did a rap video compiled with nothing but Trump’s most braggadocious tweets. This was back before Trump was President back when it was still cool to think Trump was a joke and not a force that could change all of society. But to go from police reform to racism in porn to do a walk along with nonprofits that go block to block in Chicago to try to defuse gun violence — that’s all us going to Trevor and him saying, ‘Yeah follow that thing and figure out a way to make it funny.’ Then he sits with us and goes, ‘Here’s an angle, there’s an angle, here’s a way.’ There’s a lot of shows where writers and contributors enhance the host but this is a show where the host enhances the writers and contributors.”
Sloan agrees, recalling a joke the writer’s room came up with about the “Black Monomyth” a play on the idea that while the Black community isn’t a monolith, there are certain things that generally we aren’t messing with.
“I was like, I understand what you’re saying but why don’t we change the name to, ‘We Don’t Do That’?” Sloan recalls. “If you ask a Black person, ‘Do you skydive? Do you bungee jump?’ You go, ‘No I’m Black, we don’t do that.’ So I was like, ‘Hey, let’s change the name.’ I went to Trevor like, ‘Bruh, let’s change the name. I understand this is a very smart name in politics, but I want it to not only be for who it’s for but also for a non-black person who has heard Black people say, ‘We don’t do that’. So not only am I talking to Black people but it’s also resonating with non-Black person who have heard it when they ask us to go skiing. ‘I love the fact that I can go to him and say, this title works, but let’s see if we can come up with something better.'”
We love that both Roy Wood Jr. and Dulce Sloan had such great things to say about Trevor Noah. We’re gonna miss him!
