For every major high designer that the Black community has helped made wealthy, there are countless examples of Black designers that could easily MATCH them in creativity and products if given the chance. Luxury fashion brands have been the center of some conversations recently about WHO supports us as a community and how they go about doing it, but are we really educating ourselves on who we could support to keep the dollars flowing within the community?

In case you didn’t know, there are innovative and fresh Black designers giving the likes of Louis Vuitton and Gucci a run for their money!

Take Telfar Global for example:

In the last several years, black-owned Telfar Global has taken over almost every hot and trending fashion list for its popular shopper bags. The creator, Telfar Clemons is blazing the industry with his “fashion for everyone” approach to his products. His items stay sold out so you have to keep your eyes peeled for whenever they drop every season.

Nubian Skin makes skin-tone lingerie and hosiery for women of color, especially complimentary of Black skin. Giving any quality undergarment line a run or their money.

Laquan Smith is a highly respected runway designer. You may have already seen his stuff on the likes of Cardi B, Ciara, and even Beyonce. His edgy designs are available through his website and select stores for purchase.

Heron Preston is already found where many of the “top” fashion houses are being sold. The Black-owned designs are “deeply inspired by sustainability and technology.”

Darry Brown is a cut and sewn brand for men and women that’s be inspired by workwear. Born out of the Midwest, its creator has quietly inspired some of Yeezy’s most popular designs before he branched off to do his own thing.

Designed for the “woman on the go”, Nicole Lynel has something cute and chic for almost every occasion. Her latest offer, a “girlfriend” mule sold out in almost every size almost as soon as she put them out.

Glamaholic Lifestyle started out as a blog and turned in a luxury line of travel bags. Its owner, Mia Ray can hardly keep the travel accessories in stock due to the popularity, dropping them once per season.

Were you feeling Issa Rae’s outfit in the last episode of Insecure as she reconnected with Lawrence? A lot of people did! Her shirt was designed by Thebe Magugu, a Black designer out of South Africa.

Hanifa broke the internet recently for its virtual fashion show during the height of COVID-19. The black-owned brand offers a beautiful luxury wardrobe for women.

Mifland Leather Goods is  mixed accessory goods company with a modern utilitarian approach. Its founder and brand director Tobi Egberongbe’s previous experiences and affinity to design, photography, architecture, contemporary furniture, a brand was created.

Monrowe is a black-owned luxury hat company, the mastermind of former ANTM contestant Dani Evans.

Black-owned Johnny Nelson offers conversational jewelry pieces that come in a variety of high-end materials.

Nigerian sisters are the brains and hands behind Cee-Cee’s Closet out of Brooklyn, NY. Their brand “celebrates African print through fashion.”
