Museums Open On MLK Day

Despite the government being in shambles (thanks a lot Cheeto!) and museums like the National Museum of African-American History & Culture being closed due to the government shutdown, if you’d like to buff up your history on today’s King Holiday you’re in luck.

Several museums are open for today’s 2019 King holiday and several are offering free admission to furloughed federal employees.

California African American Museum (CAAM), Los Angeles

The museum has King day activities and is currently presenting “Los Angeles Freedom Rally, 1963,” an exhibition that explores a major King address through photographs and ephemera.

Free admission.

Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD), San Francisco
The MoAD is presenting a series of King-related programs throughout the day. Admission is free today.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Target is sponsoring free King Holiday admission today at the LACMA.

Art Institute of Chicago

Today there’s an all-day King Day Festival.

The festival is free to all and museum admission is free to Illinois residents.

Institute of Contemporary Art Boston

Free admission for today’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.

New-York Historical Society Museum & Library, New York, N.Y.
During the government shutdown admission is waived for furloughed federal employees. It’s also open today Jan. 21 in honor of the King Day holiday although it’s usually closed on Mondays.
